The Living Art Museum (Nýló)

The Living Art Museum was founded in 1978 by a group of 27 artists, with the core of the group´s initiative linked to the SÚM group. The Living Art Museum is a non-profit, artist-run exhibition space and museum, venue for events, critical discussions and performances. The museum has long been the centre of experiments in Icelandic and international art, with many of the exhibitions marking turning points in the course of Icelandic art history. Each year the Living Art Museum presents a varied exhibition programme in addition to maintaining and preserving key works from this history dating back to 1965, alongside collecting documentation and archival material from the timeline of artist-led initiatives and performance in Iceland. In 2010 the museum was awarded the Icelandic Museum Award, which recognizes museums for excellence in their activities.
