Kvennaskólinn in Blönduós

Kvennaskólinn in Blönduós is the former women’s college in Blönduós. It is home to Þekkingarsetur, an academic center developing research, collaboration and educational opportunities in areas of research important to the region (freshwater fisheries, coastal community culture and textiles), a textile artist residency, as well as two interesting exhibitions:
Minjastofa    Kvennaskólans, an exhibition on the history of the women’s college in Blönduós that was run for almost 100 years, from 1879 until 1978. The exhibition was set up by the society Friends of Kvennaskólinn with support from the local culture fund. It features rooms decorated in the original style, as well as artefacts donated by former students and the relatives of Elín Briem, the college’s first principal. Guided tours of the house and exhibitions are available.
Project Vatnsdæla – The Icelandic Textile Center
The project Vatnsdæla á Refli is the telling of the Saga of the People of Vatnsdalur through pictures embroidered on a tapestry. Work began on the tapestry in 2011, and it is expected to take about 10 years to complete. The final length of the tapestry will be 46 meters. An old traditional method of sewing is used and can be taught to those interested in participating, and everyone involved in the embroidery process will be named in a book that will accompany the finished tapestry.
