Eiriksstadir – Viking Longhouse

Archeological research in the ruins of Eiríksstaðir discovered a dwelling from the 10th century and ancient Icelandic legends say that Eric the Red lived at Eiríksstaðir in Haukadal.

Eric the Red was the first man to settle Greenland after being made an outlaw in his native Iceland. His son Leif Erikson was born at Eiríksstaðir, would become the first European to discover the New World, or what is now known as America.

This is a living museum where modern day Vikings demonstrate the lifestyle of a 1000 years ago, sharing their crafts and knowledge.

The museum has excellent facilities, including a museum shop and a café.
